Air Conditioning Mechanic

This position will provide Maintenance Mechanic support service to Public Works Facility Sustainment. The following are required skills for the position:· Repair refrigeration and air conditioning equipment such as compressors, including centrifugal chillers up to 300 ton systems and evaporators. Disassembling, diagnosing the cause of the trouble and repairing defective parts or replacing them. · Must be able to operate and repair cooling towers for large air conditioning systems. · Must have knowledge of recovery Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certified Freon systems, as well as being a certified licensed EPA card holding operator. · Determines refrigerant leaks with the use of a leak detector, with soap bubbles or by sight, make necessary repairs and recharges unit with proper refrigerant, such as, but not limited to, Freon 11, 12, 22, 500 and 502. · Must have knowledge of reciprocating and centrifugal units. As well as electrical and pneumatic systems. Makes repairs to electric motors, replaces defective motors and when necessary adjusts motor to run in proper direction. Greases and oils motors and bearings, tightens or replaces V-belts, checks operating control switches, such as low pressure or dual pressure temperature and solenoid for correct settings as required for daily operations. · Must perform all required preventative maintenance inspections (PMI) suggested by the equipment manufacturer. · Must be able to follow and read blueprints, specifications and sketches · Must know the principles and methods of refrigeration and air conditioning trade. · Able to do simple arithmetic and practical mathematics; lay out work, make templates; jigs and fixtures and work with a variety of materials. Must be able to set up machines and equipment, operate single machines and equipment such as hermetic kits, purge units, drill press, electric drill motors, tube benders and flaring tools; he must know when to choose from a variety of work methods and when to solve the work problem by his own methods. · Must be able to use measuring devices; rules and precision instruments such as thermometers, gauges, calipers and micrometers and must work to close tolerances. · Some knowledge of pipe fittings, sheet metal workers and electrical trades. · Must know how to silver solder and do light brazing. · Must posses a current valid Florida state driver’s license. · Must be able to obtain a security clearance when applicable or required. · Must be required to pass a respirator physical and be fitted for a respirator. · This position requires the employee to possess an Universal EPA Certification for processing DFC/HCFC refrigerants.
